About GEO

GEO is a set of free interactive databases and tools built collaboratively by people like you

GOAL: to promote an understanding, on a global scale, of the dynamics of change in energy systems, quantify emissions and their impacts, and accelerate the transition to carbon-neutral, environmentally benign energy systems while providing affordable energy to all.

By providing easy to use and visualize data, models and analysis tools we aim to engage the public and the experts.

Data in GEO can be edited from anywhere in the world.

We invite collaborations to help build GEO.

Tools in GEO

View and Edit Data

The View and Edit Data link under each of the three categories allows users to edit data for a particular infrastructure Unit.
Select the infrastructure from the popup menus (type, country, state, infrastructure).

  1. Edit function requires you to register (create a login and password) and login.
  2. Country menu: Lists only countries for which GEO has data
  3. State menu: Default All lists all states with factsheets on infrastructure units in selected country. Selecting state restricts unit list to that state
  4. Select infrastructure unit and Click View and Edit to load editable form with all existing information
  5. All data fields are editable. Enter data in appropriate format specified in glossary file. Otherwise you will get error message on submit
  6. Please provide references and/or justification for data you submit as comments for all edited data so that the moderator can validate your input.
  7. Click on submit update after you have made all the changes. Option of "save and continue editing" has not yet been implemented
  8. Editing Geo-coordinates: You have two ways to correct geo-coordinates:
  9. Polylines: To show connection between two points on the map draw a line by clicking on "Add a Polyline". Give it a name.
  10. Polygon: To mark a region on the map draw a polygon by clicking on "Add a Polygon". Give it a name.
  11. Associated Infrastructure: Click on Add AI to link to another infrastructure unit already in GEO by following menu. Or give name/description if not in GEO
  12. Entries in tables "Units", "Environmental Issues", "Upgrade", "Owners", "Annual Performance", "Comments", "References" have select buttons on the left. These allow selective actions, for example, deleting units, plotting selected fields (plot vs. years button in Performance Table), etc.
  13. Environmental Issues: Click on Add Another Issue or edit existing issue. Select category and give description.
  14. Major Upgrades: Click on Add Another Upgrade or edit existing upgrade. Describe upgrade, cost of upgrade and years over which upgrade took place.
  15. Owners: Click on Add Another Owner or edit existing Owner (Character limit = 256). Give share of ownership if available.
  16. Comments: Add a new comment by clicking on Add New Comment. Character limit =
  17. References: Add a new reference by clicking on Add New Reference. Character limit = 1000
  18. Units Information Table: Often an infrastructure consists of multiple units. Describe each. To add additional units to the table click on "Add Another Unit". Follow format given in Glossary File.
  19. Annual Performance Table: All data in this table are stored as a double.
  20. Annual Performance Table Plots: Select Fields and plot versus years using "Plot Selected Parameters".
  21. VERSION OF DATA THAT LOADS: The data loaded in the forms is always the last moderated version. Your edits are recorded and can be viewed under "All Edits Awaiting Moderation" and "History of Edits" links.
  22. WARNING: This is an open database. Please respect copyrighted and proprietary data. Provide only open/publicly available data that can be referenced or data generated/collected by you

Add New Plants (requires registration and Login)

  1. Click on "Create New ..." tab in drop down menu under the three categories to create new page for an infrastructure unit.
  2. Select Type, Country and state and then click Create New ... . Please determine the correct country and state in which to add the infrastructure unit before you provide a new entry
  3. To add data follow same steps as in View and Edit Data. The only difference is you start with blank editable form

Perform Analysis

The following database query/analysis options have been implemented:

  1. Graph or Tabulate capacity addition by year
  2. Graph or Tabulate GWh Generated (for Power Plants) by year
  3. Plot Performance Statistics versus years on individual pages

Map Data in GEO (tab in toolbar)

This feature provides a geospatial overview of all infrastructure in a (i) selected Country (ii) selected latitude band using Google Maps.

  1. Select option (i) country or (ii) latitude band after clicking on Map Data in GEO.
  2. A map of the region is displayed with a toolbar on right
  3. Select any or all categories and toggle any infrastructure type in the toolbar to display data in GEO.
  4. It displays placemarks, polylines and polygon data in GEO.
  5. Clicking on any placemark gives a popup with the name, capacity, and link to its View and Edit page. Clicking on this link will take you to the Login page if you are NOT logged in.

Map Data (from drop down menu under categories)

This feature provides a (less detailed) geospatial overview of all infrastructure of a selected Category and Country using Google Maps.

  1. Select Category, Type (multiple types allowed)and Country from the popup menu after clicking on Map Data.
  2. Multiple selections can be made by ctrl/cmd+click option.
  3. Select State: You have the option of selecting All states (default) or a particular state.
  4. Click on Load Map Below and the selected list will be displayed using Google Maps.
  5. Clicking on any placemark gives a popup with the name, capacity, and link to its View and Edit page. Clicking on this link will take you to the Login page if you are NOT logged in.

History of Edits

To see History of Edits requires registration and Login.

  1. There are two links that allow you to see "History of Edits"
  2. All Edits Awaiting Moderation: link in the Left Toolbar takes you to a page with two tables. First table lists all edited infrastructure and the second all newly created entries. Clicking on any entry in these tables loads that edited page in view mode only.
  3. History of Edits for this System: link appears in the Left Toolbar only when you are viewing that infrastructure's page under "View and Edit". Clicking on it shows the history of edits. Each version can be viewed by clicking on corresponding entry/link.
